Skipper Tom

Well, what can I say, at the moment there is „only“ a single-handed crew. I’m sure you’d like to know how my idea of sailing around the world developed!

I was born in Düsseldorf in 1954. After training as an electromechanic and then studying to become a qualified sports teacher, I learned the profession of media designer autodidactically, which I did until the end of 2013. Then I went into semi-retirement and in the meantime I am a pensioner and can divide my time as I wish.

Even in my youth, I dreamed of sailing the seas in a boat. But it took quite a long time until the first sailing trip. In 1994 I sailed with friends from Neustadt through the Mecklenburg Bay around Fehmarn and back. In 1996, I took my inland and coastal motorboat licences. Due to a change in my job, sailing took a back seat again.

It wasn’t until spring 2009, when I often spent my lunch break with a colleague who was infected by the sailing virus, that I was infected again, but this time for real! From then on, the decision to explore the world with a sailboat matured steadily in me after finishing my work phase.

At that time, I systematically prepared myself for my circumnavigation of the globe, scoured the internet, devoured sailing books, took a few more sailing and radio licences such as the SKS, SSS, SRC, LRC and the amateur radio licence. I went sailing with friends several times and did 2 challenging trips with the well-known and very experienced circumnavigators Heide and Erich Wilts in preparation for my big round.

Since 2014, I have been sailing my own catamaran Que Mas in the IJsselmeer, the North Sea, the Baltic Sea, the English Channel, the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. In the meantime, I have left the Mediterranean and sailed via Portugal and Madeira to the Canary Islands. In the meantime, I’ve been sailing around Brazil for almost 2 years, partly due to the pandemic.
